It’s no secret that my children are very hands on learners, and what’s better is when they can make something themselves AND make a ton of noise doing it. That’s why when I was asked to review the Smartivity Mechanical Xylofun by PlaSmart I was thrilled at the chance. A summer project that involves getting the kids off of technology, engaging and working together was right up our alley.
I don’t know who was more excited when the box arrived, but we all jumped at the chance to attempt what seemed like a big project.
So many pieces!
Intimidated at first, mommy and daddy stepped in and thought we’d be doing this all night. Boy were we wrong! The kids dove right in and took over easily! Who knew they had it in them to actually work TOGETHER on anything, let alone a seemingly huge project! Mommy and daddy were thrilled to have them quietly working on something because as we all know this is a very rare occurrence around here.
The provided instructions made it simple for even my youngest (9 yrs old) to follow along. They took turns adding brackets and elastics and in just under 1 hour were done. Each section was clearly labelled and packaged separately to ensure a smooth transition to the next piece of the project too. I am also really happy to report that no one broke a piece either, so this set is super sturdy if it holds up to my very rambunctious children.
Happiness in a box!
These boys really surprised me and were so excited to see their finished project too. The provided booklet also gave them songs to play and had them looking on the internet for more. These little composers were arranging and re-arranging the pegs, letting their imaginations run wild with musical tunes! The best part is that the instrument makes music without noise – parents this is important!!!
Next up!
We are thinking of painting the instrument but both boys haven’t decided on a colour/theme yet. I think it looks great just the way it is but I love the fact that it isn’t just a toy that has been tossed aside like the others – endless fun and so many options to re-create!
